Material and Idea: Chinese Photography History 1840s-2011

Dear Colleague,

Symposium on “Material and Idea: Chinese Photographic History 1840s-2011” will be held in Huai’an, Jiangsu Province, during October 25 to 26, 2011. Bringing together scholars from all over Mainland China, this conference will lay the foundation for a series of symposiums on Chinese photographic history, and is also expected to attract scholars from abroad in the future. Papers we receive for the symposium will be published as a book and distributed to all participants as the accomplishment of years of research on Chinese photographic history. The second half of the book will focus on the scholarship of overseas researchers. The aim of this formal publication is to introduce recent overseas scholarship to Chinese scholars. The Organizing Committee would therefore like to invite you to give a paper on your recent findings on any subject related to Chinese photographic history as your personal outstanding contribution to this field.

It is our great pleasure to have a large attendance of Chinese scholars with shared interest in Chinese photographic visual materials. Scholars are going to report on their recent research—case studies, compilation of source materials, understanding and writings of Chinese photographic theory. We will especially focus on the rewriting of Chinese photography history with the discovery of new photographic sources. As the interdisciplinary approach has been deemed worthwhile in the field of Chinese photography history, we need to explore how to make it suggestive and productive.

It would be of great assistance to the organizers if you would kindly forward this invitation to your colleagues or students who may be interested in Chinese photographic history.

“史料与史识——摄影术传入至今的中国摄影书写”

中国摄影史处于被重新梳理、探讨、撰写的时刻。

其一是大量的新的摄影史料进入研究者的视野:例如存于欧洲的晚清影像和存于美国的民国影像资料被集中性地引进国内,带来了关于这一时期摄影史研究资料的极大丰富和拓展。这一进程也包括过去几年中众多国内学者对于摄影师田野考察式的口述史访谈和图像全集的整理、出版,以及通过对摄影文本的梳理带来的对于中国摄影史关键问题的集中讨论和断代史的书写。

其二是中国摄影史被置于更加多元和丰富的学科背景中。近代史、艺术史、美术史、传播学、人类学、社会学、城市研究、女性研究、殖民地研究等,大量学科广泛使用图像文本作为研究材料,这一过程中也产生了对于摄影史研究的经验借鉴。

论文结集的过程中,我们得到了学者、机构和学术期刊的大力协助,特为感谢。

文集上半册为大陆学者对于中国摄影史研究的成果,将以摘要形式在海外期刊做一介绍;此论文集下半册为海外学者对于中国影像的研究方法和研究成果的展示。我们期待这次会议,以及在未来几年陆续展开的有关中国影像历史的国际学术研讨会,会成为中国影像研究的学术交流平台。

The use of the collection of essays, Material & Idea: Chinese Photography History 1840s – 2011 is limited to this academic seminar.  With consideration to the copyright of participating expert papers, this collection of essays is strictly limited to use in discussion sessions during the seminar.  It can not be published, redistributed or sold.  Copyright of each essay belongs to the essay’s author.  The copyright is hereby explained.

In preparing the collection of papers for publication, we received generous and valuable support from many scholars, institutions and journals. We are greatly indebted to them for promoting communication in this emerging field of scholarship.

The first part of this book is fruits from Chinese scholars’ studies on the history of Chinese photography. Abstracts of these papers will be published in academic journal as a brief introduction of this conference. The second half is an exhibition of existing scholarship and methodology from overseas scholars. We expect this symposium, together with its future series in the next few years, to be a basis of academic exchanges on Chinese photographic history.
